Introduction/ exposition- The story is born out of incidents that take place on a train traveling across Italy to Rome. It starts with an old woman making her way through other passengers in the train along with a young gentleman. They choose the comfortable seats which did not belong to them. The young man seems to show respect towards the older woman but she seems very shrewd in her manners, hinting of something like the young man being paid to serve her. Their relationship is not clear in the beginning. The old woman looks defensive and exchanges her seat as the man gives fleeting looks at some other female. Yet the man is polite and asks her coyly if he can go to the rest room.
The old woman’s character is persistent since the beginning; she literally forces things her way, and mostly gets away with it. Later in the film we get to know that Fillipo is doing his community service and has been burdened with the task of escorting a general's widow to a memorial service. The supporting characters like the young girl, ticket checker and few passengers are tools through which the main characters are exposed and we get to know of their backgrounds.
There are several complications owing to old woman's annoying nature and her conflict with other travelers which lead to the pinnacle where the man finally leaves her and goes. Her first argument with a confused man about the phone portrays her right in front of the ticket checker which is why he shifts them to the 1st class cabin.
Rising action- After the arguments she had with other people, causing problems, the old woman continuously yells out and asks for favors from Fillipo. Then his tolerance reaches its limits and he explodes. At this point the story his character is in foreground which comes out through his conversations with the teenage girl and other people at the cafeteria.
Climax- Fillipo has been patient with her till a point and the he suddenly there is an outburst of his emotions and he disappears from the cabin, leaving her behind. This is the turning point in the film since he argues back with her for the first time and finally leaves.
Falling action- The woman then realizes how much she needs him and runs to find him. The moment of suspense is build when you wonder whether he will return to her or not? Or what happens now? She feels at fault and is helpless.
Catastrophe/Denouement- By now it’s clear that the man won’t return. She is left on her own. The confused man with whom she had argued earlier about the phone helps her get the luggage down to the platform when the train stops and she sits on it hoping that Fillipo will come back.
